Softshells offer a middle ground between fleece and weatherproof jackets. They are significantly more windproof (and therefore warmer) than fleece, not 100% waterproof like weatherproof jackets, but (crucially) many times more breathable! Softshells are extremely lightweight and can withstand even the roughest conditions.
